Getting Close!

24 days until we are off to Italy! Everything seems to be coming together, with the exception of trying to pack 2 weeks in a backpack, (still not sure how I'm going to manage that...)
The help I've received here has been priceless. Thank you.
One question I can't seem to find the answer to is this: We are bringing our 2 sons. One will turn 16 while we are in Florence on the Day of John the Baptist, and the other will have just turned 18. On the Vatican website, it says that up to, AND including 18 year olds are at a reduced price ticket. Does anyone know if that rule is the same for most attractions in Italy, ie; Colosseum, Uffuzi Gallery, etc?
Is a Roma Pass worth it for us? I'm think not?
Thanks for your input.

I'm jealous that you're going to be going to Italy. We just adore the place, and will return soon.
While I am adventurous, I don't know that I'd be up to hauling around a heavy backpack. I'm going to pare down my clothes in the future to where my 21" rolling bag is half as heavy (as in the past.) I suggest you do a test packing on your backpack--and go out for a 4 mile hike. The boys will be okay with their backpacks, however.
When you go up to any ticket counter, just ask for two childrens' tickets for your guys. You'll have no problem.
If you plan to hit very many museums and art galleries and use mass transit, getting the Roma Pass is just fine. My best suggestion about Rome is to learn how to navigate your way through the city on the buses. It's a place where you can walk yourself to death.
And I would suggest you go ahead and read all about Rome on the city's best website--RonInRome.com. He covers just about every subject.

Thanks for your input, David. I'm a pretty experienced hiker, so I'm not really worried about the weight of the backpack, just that I won't be able to choose what to pack. I've already resigned myself to just 2 pairs of shoes, which was difficult for a girly girl like me . :)
I've been told by family who have been to Rome that it's completely walk able for a family like ours, so I'm not sure what to think. We are staying in an apartment in the Trastevere neighborhood, so I'm just not sure!!

Jenny,
Packing light is very freeing so go for it! 2 pair of shoes is all I take whether 3 nights or 4 weeks, summer or winter. One great walking shoe and one good walking sandal is a good combo for summer. Do your girly girl thing with jewelry, hats, and a nice pedicure. A sundress is a good option.

Rome is very walkable AND it has good public transportation. You can buy 24, 48 and 72 hour transit passes if teh Roma Pass does not make sense for admissions. Just be sure you all have some miles on your shoes so you get chafing out of the way.

Depending on where you are in Trastevere, the pass might be a good way to get across the Tiber. Some sights have lots of walking once you enter (Vatican Museums, Roman Forum), so how much walking you want to do is up to you. Perhaps the RomaPass for the adults and a handful of ordinary bus tickets for the boys? Depends on what you want to see and how you plan to get there.

Buses are a good idea from Trastevere. I've stayed there and I am a marathoner and have both walked and taken the tram/bus. The Roma Pass may be worth it depending on the sights you want to see and how long you will be in Rome. Have a great trip!
