I was last in Venice 22 years ago and things have changed since then. I came across this YouTube couple with some useful tips on coping with initial arrival and getting around the city. https://www.youtube.com/@NomadCitello/featured
I appreciate the details photos and questions that will always come up but not always covered in the guide books or videos.
Great, thanks!!! I leave for my first trip to Italy next week, which includes Venice. I’m going to watch all 5 videos tonight.
This is so helpful! Thanks for posting!
I've been to Venice a few times and just watched one of the videos - seems well done with practical info. I'll be back in May!
Thanks for these! I have bookmarked to rewatch as I get ready to leave.
Seems good to me, as someone who has visited Venice many times.
Venice = beautiful, but Venice also = SORE FEET! Sometimes I take the vaporetto, but if it's late at night, it can be slow to come. Even if my feet are tired, sometimes I can calculate I'll get back to my hotel quicker by walking than waiting for the boat...
This is the kind of detail that I love!
One question someone might be able to help me with: if I need to get off at a stop and get on a different boat at the same stop (to change lines), do I need to scan my ticket again?
This website is also full of great info on Venice.
It does say scan the passes every time.
Also the app CheBateo? Is handy. Links to the vap routes and schedules.
On my last visit, the machines for scanning your vaporetto ticket are right in front of the entrance ramp to each boat, so I would scan each time.
Safe travels!
the law is every time you board a boat you scan. When your ticket is checked if you have not scanned for that trip, even though your pass is otherwise valid, you will get a fine. They are strict. They are not cheap fines. Pass the scanner, scan.
They sometimes check on the dock, in the waiting area. You don't even need to be on a boat to get a fine - if you have passed the scanner and are on the dock you are liable for a fine.
Thanks for the clarification about scanning every time. I deleted my incorrect assumption post. I know in my home city they wanted everyone to tap on and off buses and Light Rail to collect travel data, but it eventually died out as there was no financial incentive to do so. I think that is a great data collection system for any public transport.
Now, if I could only figure out Venice's garbage collection system and strictures for apartment lets......
@MariaF-there’s an app-Veritas. Shows where the barges are and other good info too.
@SJS. Thanks. I'll check it out.
Those videos are great! We will be in Venice later this week and as a visual person, it was helpful for me to see exactly what to expect. Our BandB gave us step-by-step vaporetto instructions, but it was helpful to match the signs up to the emailed directions. Thanks much for sharing.
