getting around tuscany

Hello,

I've decided to do a 2 night florence- 1 night in CT- 2 nights in tuscany towns (maltepulcianno/val D’orcia)-3 nights Rome.

What is the best way to get to CT from Florence? What is the best way to get from CT directly to southern parts of tuscany bypassing florence?

I wanted to rent a car to drive around towns in tuscany before heading to Rome. Is there a way to catch a train from one of those cities or would i have to go back up to Florence to catch a train to Rome?

Thank you

Train from Florence to CT

You could pick up your rental car in La Spezia and head to Tuscany towns
Drop your car in Chiusi then train to Rome

Montepulciano

Pick up at La Spezia would be the first choice.
If picking up on a Sunday, then those offices are likely closed, therefore the next best solution is the Pisa Airport (train to Pisa Centrale, then PisaMover people mover to the airport).
The car return can be in Chiusi (if Europcar or Avis-Budget) or Orvieto (if Hertz). Both are not too far from the Val D'Orcia.
You can also drive to Rome and return there, but choose the return office carefully. In my experience, if you come from Tuscany on the A1, the locations at Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina station are relatively easy to reach from the freeway and that would put you downtown at a short distance from the historical center.
Returning to Fiumicino airport is easy, but a longer distance to reach, and then you need 50 euro to pay the taxi back to the city.
