In mid-March we'll be based in Florence for a couple of weeks. One of the weekends we are going to stay at a B&B outside San Gimignano. We'll leave Florence on Friday, return Monday. We want to visit Siena and other towns in the area. We've never rented a car in Europe before and wanted advice. Rent a car in Florence for the weekend trip? Or take a bus to Siena and rent a car there?

By "whole trip," you mean just the whole weekend excursion, not the whole couple of weeks, right?

Rent in Florence. Get a map of Florence with all of the TLzones listed. Get a good GPS. And have a great weekend.
