Going to Italy for the first time in late September/early October. After a few days in Rome, I'm planning to head to Portofino and then Tuscany. Any thoughts on the best routes/mode of transport and "must-dos" along the way? I was thinking of the train to Portofino and then leisurely driving through Tuscany, but curious what travel vets think. Thanks.

I am heading to Italy as well the end of Sept/early Oct. Am interested in the same areas as you, especially the Italian Riviera. There are several small towns, but would like to get someone's take on which of these towns is the best to stay in to experience the Riviera. I've just started on this quest. I'll let you know if I get any good info. I rented some videos and it helps. You might try that if you haven't.

We are staying in Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino and Monterossa (Cinque Terre) then to Florence then to Rome.
