Getting an authentic experience for kids in Italy?

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to connect our children (ages 5-12) with other kids or with activities which really can give them a flavor of the culture? We would love for them to interact with the locals and experience more interactions (which museums don't really offer). We will be in going from Rome to Viareggio to Venice and can stop at places generally along those routes.

I think the thermal baths in Umbria and perhaps Gelato making sound good (don't have a specific class in mind tho).

Any other ideas?

I was thinking of starting a similar topic, as we will be bringing our 9 and 11 year-olds to Italy for the first time this summer. We took their older brother on a similar trip 12 years ago, and we are hoping to recreate some of the magic from that first trip. I too would love to hear anyone's can't miss activities with kids, but we already have a pretty packed itinerary. Here are some of the things we're planning on doing:

Collodi's Pinocchio Park. It's in a little town just North of Florence that has statues and exhibits that walk through the Un-Disneyfied version of the story of Pinocchio. A lot of climbing and running around for the kids and a must do for us.

In Rome - Gladiator School

In Florence - Pizza and Gelato cooking class at Food & Wine Academy

In Venice - Mask making class

I think a late afternoon/early evening stop in Siena's Il Campo is a must. On our first visit, about a half dozen boys, including our son, played a make-shift soccer game with a beach ball. I think it literally hit everyone in the square at least once. No one cared.

In Venice, there is a tiny park in the Southeastern part of Castello overlooking the lagoon. Now this was 12 years ago, but there was some old and rusty play equipment, which probably would have been off limits in the States. But every day neighborhood kids would play there in the late afternoon. Our son had a great time interacting with local kids there.

I'd love to hear any other suggestions.

What fantastic ideas!! I will check out the camps (don't know why I didn't think of that!).
Sweeney- is the food and wine academy you mentioned in Florence? Also, do you have the link for the mask making class in Venice? Any suggestions on places to stay for a family of 5 in/near Venice?

Thanks so much!!

The Food & Wine Academy is in Florence, and it's where we'll be taking the class. But they also have a villa outside of town where they hold the same courses. Go to: http://www.florencecookingclasses.com/index.php

The mask making class is held by Ca' Macana in Dorsoduro. Go to: http://www.camacana.com/

As for where to stay in Venice, we are using hotel points, so I'm probably not much help. That said, if I had a family of five, I would likely be using airbnb. I bet you could get something pretty nice, roomy and affordable in Dorsoduro, Castello or maybe Cannaregio. All would be in authentic Venetian neighborhoods and away (but not too far) from the tourist hoards. My advice - whatever you do, when visiting Venice, do not commute in; make sure you are actually staying on the island of Venice.

I took my child to Italy before and we are going again. I like physical activities for kids, My suggestions are dome/tower climbs. Even a trip to McDonald's can be authentic as many Italian kids are in there. How about soccer events? Riding the boats around Venice and trains anywhere. Art classes? Florence does art for kids in Strozzi center (I did not do this and cannot comment on quality.). Food tasting, of course, at meals and snack time. Have the kids guess what some of the statues are saying for fun. Feeding pigeons, if allowed,in piazzas. Give your kids an inexpensive camera and let them take pictures. Kids can be good photographers. Have fun! Remember - kids are kids regardless of national origin.
