Getting a taxi from the Naples airport, and visiting Pompeii and storing luggage…

My wife and I will be visiting Naples, Italy soon. Once we arrive, we will be getting a taxi from the Naples airport to go see the ruins of Pompeii. Has anyone here in their travel experience got a taxi from the Naples airport and then went to see Pompeii? If so, was it an easy experience? Also, was it easy to store your bags at the Pompeii Scavi Villa Dei Misteri train station?

Thank you.

You could ask the taxi driver to wait for you in front of Pompeii for a couple of hours and then take you to your final destination. There is a € 100 fixed fare for that from downtown Naples, so do not pay much more from the airport!

Other than that, it's just a taxi ride. Make clear you are paying by credit card before getting on. Dishonest cabbies prefer to be paid in cash.

Pompeii has its own free luggage checking, and while I did not use it, no one posting here has ever had any trouble with it.

There is a sheet of fixed taxi rates you can download for Naples. Although it says (in Italian) that all fixed rates include "all extras", southern Italy can be a bit ... lawless. So print out the sheet to wave at the driver.

Note that this is a long and expensive ride. What are your plans after seeing Pompeii? You can't rely on finding cabs sitting around there. Can you take your luggage on the crowded commuter train to ?? ... Sorrento?

Edit: Maybe you are arriving so late you want to cram Pompeii in before sunset? Be sure of their shoulder-season hours and last admission time. Why not go to the hotel and visit Pompeii another day on the really cheap commuter train, free of luggage?
