I have been told I have to have a codice fiscale to start my bank account (and yes I must have an account here for many reasons) but the process eludes me entirely. Any clues? I have one on line but apparently that is not good enough.
The website ExpatsInItaly.com provides a wealth of information:

You have to go the Uffico del Entrate with your permesso di soggiorno, passport, and Carta di Identita that you got through the comune and photocopies of everything. They will give you the official piece of paper with the Codice Fiscale on it.
If you reside in the US (or probably even if you just still get mail in the US or can have someone get it for you), you can do it online pretty much...at least with my vice consulate (Newark, NJ)....there's a link to the form and I just sent it in with a self addressed, stamped envelope - they emailed me my cf and then sent a paper print-out with the info...I received the actual card in the mail a few weeks later (but have never actually needed the card - only the print-out with the number was needed to open my bank account).
p.s. what do you mean you have one online? from one of those formula's that figure it out for you or do you have the actual email from your consulate? No one has ever asked me for the actual card...consulate print-out was good enough
