Germany to Italy

Hello,
We are traveling with our 18 year-old and 12 year-olds this summer. We are landing in Munich and leaving from Milan and have approximately 5 days for Munich/Bavaria and then approximately 5 days in Northern Italy and have decided to travel by train. With so little time I'm concerned about diluting the trip by trying to see too much in too little time and am not sure whether we should just choose a central location in N. Italy or travel from one place to another (given that we have children with us). Our thought was to go to Bolzano and then perhaps to Genova or to Venice and then we must go to Milan to leave. Any suggestions, given that we are traveling in early July?
Thank you-Andrea

Andrea,

There are lots of possibilities. The trip from Munich to Italy will take about 4-6 hours, depending on which place you choose. You could spend a few days in Lucca or Verona. It will be Opera season in Verona at that time, so it may be a challenge to find a hotel, but seeing an Opera in that impressive Roman Amphitheatre would be a great Italian experience.

You could also stay for a few days in Verona or Peschiera del Garda, and spend a day at Gardaland which would be of interest to your children. Stay in Milan for the last night before your flight and have a brief look around there.

Since you will only have 4-5 days in Italy, you may choose to go to Venice & Verona.

Then spend your last night in Milan before your flight home.

I would definitely go to Venice. The kids will love it, it is such a unique city. Travel-wise, it is closer than going to the other coast to Genova which, IMO, is not nearly as interesting as Venice. You could easily take a day trip from there.

I don't believe any of us would include Genova on the list for consideration. Bolazano (with Ice Man archeology museum), Castelrotto (quick bus connection further up the mountain), and Venice (really special) would be my first choices.
