Germany/Italy 2017 Summer Vacation

We are in the very early stages of planning. The must do of the trip is the Porsche Museum. We initially thought Germany, Austria, Switzerland and now have drafted an itinerary Germany/Northern Italy. We have been to Italy and seen Venice, Florence, Rome on a previous trip. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A car rental would be necessary. Does this make sense or are trains better and stay in larger cities?

We are going to the Dolomites in September 2017 and I would advise staying in Castelrotto, rather than Bolzano. Also, we've stayed in Cinque Terre and highly recommend staying in Monterosso. The hotel/restaurant choices are better there, though many prefer one of the other towns.

The trails at the south end of Cinque Terre may still be closed. We were there in September of 2015 and the trail was still closed from Corniglia to Riomaggiore.

In Milan, if you want to see the Last Supper you need reservations well in advance.
