Genova ..Old Town safe...?

Rick is a champion of Cinque Terre, flying open jaws (I'm doing a first rip 3/1:Rome~3/17:Milan), and staying overnight to experience a place with the locals after (tourist) hours. But Rick is oddly silent about Genoa, an obvious stop from C-T to a Milan departure flight. From what I've read (in LP, LG, RG), Geno's Old Town maze of narrow streets sounds fascinating ..BUT the guidebooks also advise tourists to stay away from parts or all of it after shops close each day (late afternoon? and Sat/Sun?) ..which sort of defeats my reason to visit.

Since our flight departs mid-Monday, that dictates a Milan hotel Sunday, which puts us in Genoa Saturday (from C-T Friday). I'd rather not flirt with the broad daylight experience my son had in a major plaza in Athens: a group of men casually approached with "you can give us your camera, or you can go to the hospital" (while locals looked the other way). He was OK, but has NO photos of a month in Greece/Turkey! If this is an issue in 'funky' Genoa, then I need to rethink my interary: skip 'Saturday' Genoa, or do C-T earlier and end at Milan from Venice side instead.

Duane, I did the CT to Milan trip by car in about 3-4 hours, if I remember correctly. It's just less than 200 miles from La Spezia to the Milan - Malpensa airport. That's less than going to Fargo. There's no need to stop over in Genoa unless you feel you need to see it. If you leave CT at 8:00 AM you should be to Malpensa by noon.

One thing to note, traffic around Genoa can get backed up, as it's a major seaport. But it's no worse than I-94 going west from Maple Grove to Rogers!

I haven't done any more than drive through Genoa, so I can't verify Rick's opinion on the place. Usually if Rick skips it in his guidebook then that means he thinks it's skippable.

We spent two nights in Genoa in 2006 and we loved the Old Town. We were there both nights and felt completely safe. There are some very narrow and dark alleys that are obvious places to avoid.

If there are no people visible in the alley best to avoid it. If you stick to where the crowds are you should not have any problems.
