Genova beach recommendations and method of travel in area

We are planning to spend five days in the Genova area. I would like to visit several beaches near Genova. Do you have any favorite recommendations and the best way to get there? I’m on the fence between sticking with public transportation or maybe getting a rental car for the week. Especially looking for snorkeling opportunities.

The beaches in Monterosso al Mare are nice and you could easily get there by train from the Genova Brignole station - link (trenitalia app is handy too). I was there last spring and swam even though it wasn't super warm out (still refreshing).

Tripadvisor lists several other beaches also - link . Cheers.

I’ve never been too crazy about Genoa, but , although I don’t consider Genoa the most beautiful city in Italy, Genoa has certainly some of the most outstanding surroundings in the world, so it’s perfect for day trips to the many pretty places in the region. Most locations of interest along the coast are easily reachable by train (even more so than with a car), therefore you can stick to public transportation for your needs, especially because of the parking scarcity in Genoa and every single town in Liguria..

The region is very mountainous and cliffy, therefore beaches will be largely pebble beaches and coves, with lots of rocks and cliffs. Don’t expect Florida type beaches in Liguria, especially East of Genoa.

In the city itself, probably Boccadesse and Vernazzola are the most popular spots. But to me these are some outstanding places you should visit near Genoa (Eastern Riviera, east of Genoa), in increasing distance from the city
Camogli
San Fruttuoso
Portofino (not a beach but a popular VIP yacht harbor, the beach is at Paraggi, on the way from Santa Margherita).
Sestri Levante (Bay of Silence)
Moneglia
Bonassola
Monterosso (Cinque Terre)

I know the Western Riviera (west of Genoa) less. Varazze, Finale, Celle are popular destinations on that side. I’ve been further west to Laigueglia and Sanremo, both of which are nice, but I don’t know that side as well. The Western Riviera has sandy beaches compared to the East.
