We will be staying in CT for 4-5 days and wonder if a short day trip to Genoa is worth a "look around?" Has anyone traveled there?
I have been in Genoa. Here's my take. You're in the CT to relax and get away from cities. Sure, take a break and plunge into Genoa, but it will rob you of the peace and quiet one goes to the CT to obtain. Genoa is hectic, noisy and jammed with trafic.
As the previous poster noted, I wouldn't waste a day in Genoa. We were there last October. It's similar to the port of Long Beach.
Thanks for your thoughts on this city. I had a feeling that was the case --- couldn't find any travel guide to "inspire" us. We'll just stay in serene mode!
Hi Kathy It's too bad that the previous posters had such a negative view on this city. Yes it is a city but we stayed there before a cruise for 3 days. We used it as our gateway to the CT. Genoa is a walking city filled with architecture fine shopping and exploration. We wandered the streets and got lost in the pleasure of being in Italy. We explored the harbor area and had a great meal well we had many great meals, and pasty.
It's too bad the others didn't look and see what they were at. The architecture is facinating, we enjoyed listening to music on night in a square and shopping an open area market to buy lunch. Enjoy and embrace everywhere you travel to. Take the time to travel up for the day it's only 90 minutes away.
I have nothing bad to sat about Genoa, but if you want to get away from the CT for awhile I would suggest a day trip by train to any number of Ligurian towns - Santa Margherita, Camogli, Levanto, Sestri Levanti or a boat trip to Portovenere.
We just spent 3 slow days in Genoa and enjoyed walking around as well as visiting the Galata Museo del Mare before taking the ferry to Sardinia. It is a good point to use to travel to Ventimiglia for a short break as well. BTW currently not all of the trails in CT are open as we found out.
Sharon - Are the CT trails closed because it's off season or for repair work? Which ones?
