Hello- I will be spending two weeks in early July in Genoa. What is in that area that will be fun to do and visit ? Thank you
I visited Genoa at about the same time, in 2012, and I particularly enjoyed the Aquarium of Genoa (one of the largest in Europe) and the Museo del Mare, Palazzo Reale, and the brilliant Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. You can also try taking day tours to Cinque Terre, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure and even Milan.
What motivates you to stay in the big city? Timeshare, business, relatives, or? I know that Genoa has sites of interest, but it doesn't top our list of destination priorities for two weeks. The city has fine train connections along the coast in both directions, or many of the smaller towns served by rail have similar good, direct train options in their relevant direction of travel. If you want to visit the Milan Expo (world's fair in anther big city), then you can leave early and get there in two hours by train.
Genova is a great city. The coast either north or south of it is beautiful, and there are lots of little towns to visit - besides Cinque Terre. Eat lots of seafood, take a ferry ride, drive into the hills for a change of pace and fewer tourists.
Go to Piazza Ferrari and from there walk into the old center, Cannetto Lungo, which are the characteristic narrow dark streets of Old Genoa. Or do a leisurely walk down the promenade on Corso Italia ending in Boccadase, which is a colorful old cove area that has some seafood restaurants and a really good gelato place. I recommend eating two things while in Genoa: fresh focaccia from a bakery, and pasta with pesto.
Thank you all for the specific things that will be fun to visit. Take care.-George
