Any comments/suggestions on a round trip from Genoa to
Venice (two day stay) by either air, train or a combination of each...about mid September?
Paul - the train is very easy and cheap. You go city center to city center without having to hassle with airport transfers (if there are any Genoa to Venice flights).
You can look at schedules and fares at www.trenitalia.com
I'd do train. It's really easy to get into Venice by train and you can catch the vaporetto just over the road from the station to go down the Grand Canal. The airport is a bit of a hike out of town. I had a quick look on the rail website and it takes about 5 hours which sounds a while but with all the airport security and then getting to and from airports it may prove quicker - it will certainly be cheaper. There is a direct service and one that stops in Milan. Check out the rail site.
I have travelled at least a dozen times between Genoa and Venice. i would take the 2nd class train day time. Night trains can be problematic with thieves.
Take my book THE SECOND VENICE to read on the way.
