Is the autostrada along the coast a reasonable drive? looks like a 3.5 hour drive.
Reasonable in what way?
Google maps shows a 2h drive along the coast.
I meant is this a very winding road / cliff side road or regular highway - safety factor and ease of drive?
Regular highway --- we just drove it last fall.
Autostrada means freeway, autobahn. You can drive at 80mph, that's the speed limit. Since the area is mountainous there are lots of tunnels and viaducts, but curves are soft. Also you won't be able to see much of the coast because, aside for the many tunnels, you will be largely inland a few km from the sea and often, when not in a tunnel, quite high on a viaduct.
This is how it looks like. It is actually one of the greatest engineering marvels of highway construction.
It never took me much longer than about 2.5 hours to get to Florence, therefore getting to Pisa will be less.
Thanks all - real helpful
esp nancys8 and Roberto da Firenze with highway details- im onward bound to Firenze - good info!
I don't want to be rude, but since you are going to drive abroad and you don't know what an autostrada is, you could:
- google image the toll stations on the A12
- google image the signs saying (in Italian) Speed trap ahead
- learn about the Tutor System that monitors the average speed between two fixed cameras
- memorize the ZTL sign used in the cities where you could stop along the way
- learn about the blu/green color coded signs: green means autostrada, blu means ordinary roads
- check your IDP
