Genoa to La Spezia

Hello, A friend and I are going from zermatt to Cinque Terre. We have reservations into genoa principe and are planning on takin the train towards La Spezia and getting off in Vernazza. We just checked online and it says you need to make reservations from genoa to la spezia and there were only a couple of trains. Is this correct? I was under the impression that the trains ran from genoa to la spezia more frequently and didn't require reservations.

Laura, sounds like you might be looking at RailEurope. If yes, please use www.trenitalia.com the Italian train website. There are numerous runs a day from Genoa to the CT and La Spezia. Most runs are on Regionale trains. You can't buy or reserve these trains online in advance unless you are within 7 days of the travel date. Enter Genova (Tutte Le Stazioni). Seat reservations are not even possible on these trains. Secondly, your best runs may not depart from Genoa Piazza Principe. There are several train stations in Genoa. For the journey you want, you may need to depart from the Genova Nervi train station. It's about a 90-minute train ride. There are a few fast train runs from Genoa but they don't stop in the CT. Instead, they pass through to La Spezia. At La Spezia, you change to a Regionale train to go back north. There are several runs from Genova Nervi to Vernazza without a train change. These runs will be on a Regionale train. However, even some of the Regionale runs may have a train change. You just have to look at www.trenitalia.com. Finally, if you want to see the fares, just put in a date that is 7 days or less from the day you are looking. The fares will appear. For example, today is 7/4. If you put in 7/5 through 7/10, you will see the fares.
