Genoa to Cinque Terra

We are planning 5-7 days in the Liguria region sometime in Sept/Oct. My ancestors are from Genoa and environs (there is a town named Lagomarsino which might be a one-day car rental trip 45 min into hills from the Riviera). We are hoping to train extensively between Genoa and as far south as Cinque Terra. We want to explore the latter and maybe just a day trip to Genoa, perhaps staying in a central town, perhaps Santa Margherita or Camogli and train to our destinations. We would be open to 3 days in one spot and three in another if that affords us better proximity and less training. We want that magical blend of adventure and relaxation. Beaches are a not a must but we want the weather to be clement and hopefully avoid hoards of tourists. Any tips navigating/accommodations/eateries in the Cinque Terra of course welcomed.

In September, I'd have no weather qualms, it does get rainy sometimes in October. If you are intent on hiking in CT, I'd stay there and then in another town closer to Genoa. That way, you can enjoy the CT villages in morning and evening and have easy access to trails. Then the remaining time in SML or Camogli would be nice as a contrast. I enjoyed the hiking out of Camogli as much as CT.
Some would argue picking one base for the whole week, and they do have a point, but I like variety more than I like day trips, so it's just a personal preference.

I agree with the poster above. We stayed in Monterosso for three days and then moved to Santa Margherita Ligure for another three days. We enjoyed Santa Margherita Ligure much more than the Cinque Terre.

Thank you both! If any hotels or restaurants come to mind, send them along. Also, not to complicate matters, we have a friend in Monaco and had thoughts to train his way for a couple nights and fly out of Nice.
