Genoa Piazza Principe Station Connections

Three questions:

  1. What is the distance between the cruise ship dock in Genoa and the Piazza Principe Station?
  2. How frequently do trains run Genoa to/from Cinque Terre?
  3. When departing Italy, what options will we have for a night train to the north out of Genoa?

Regarding question 3: The eventual terminus of the trip north is Frankfurt or possibly Dortmund. We'd like the "sleeper" leg of the trip north to be out of Genoa so we could see some of the countryside further north in daylight. We prefer to go through Milan or Turin directly north through Switzerland rather than to the east through Austria via Munich. Please take a look at my other post regarding Cinque Terre. Thanks.

  1. I've never taken a cruise, but I've walked from Genova PP to the port and it didn't take more than 10 min. Of course the port is big and there are many piers, but the farthest you can be is probably 15-20 min walk. However if you have suitcases, even 3/4 of a mile is quite a distance, so in case you have luggage maybe it's better to get a taxi.
  2. very frequently, at least 2 per hour.
  3. The best views are probably when you go through the Alps. You should take a morning train out of Genoa, because with a night train it will be dark when you go through the Alps. Besides night trains aren't too comfortable in my opinion. I find it hard to sleep with the noise and the jerking around. From Genoa you would have to go through Milan regardless. Then from Milan, if you want to take the Swiss route, you'd go via Chiasso then Basel or Zurich. Milan is the hub. Whether you want night trains or day trains, Milan is the departing point of all and you'll have to change trains there regardless. Use www.bahn.com for options from Genoa to whichever city in Germany you want.
