I am headed to Genoa for a day and want to know what the most interesting sights are, good restaurants any great tips,, etc. Thanks!
A great place to see the whole town - climb to the top of the Lighthouse of Genoa..."If you can manage to climb the 375 steps to the top of the lighthouse you will be rewarded with a splendid view over the port and the whole bay. After a year of closure the lighthouse is now open to everyone. It is necessary to book in advance." Check it out.
We enjoyed our short visit to Genoa.
Be sure to visit the Palazzo Reale. We also enjoyed the Aquarium at the time (2006) it was the largest aquarium in Europe. We also loved wandering the streets of the old town. Also you have to try the pesto with a loaf of focaccio bread. Delicious.
There is a very large and old farmer's market called Mercato Orientale off the Via XX Settembre, which is the main street leading downtown to the Piazza Ferrari. It has a website. I also like wandering around Cannettolungo area which is a short walk from Piazza Ferrari. It is a warren of old narrow alleys with butcher shops, jewelers, etc. Very unique. I like the Promenade on the Corso Italia and also a small neighborhood fishing village called Boccadasse. Most of all I like the food! Pesto and focaccia. Look for bakeries that sell focaccia, tortas, pastries and have some for breakfast! My favorite are cream puffs called "cavallini." Better than any cream puff you've had here.
