We're planning to spend a few days in Cinque Terre and wondered if it's worth our time to go to Genoa for a day trip to see the aquarium. We've been to the Shedd aquarium in Chicago and didn't know if the one in Genoa is impressive, or not worth the time. Are there other highlights in Genoa that we would also want to see? Thanks!
Genova is a neat city, this sort of strange mix of industry and art, the very old with the very new. It is certainly worth seeing, and while the aquarium is neat, I don't know if it is something you want to spend an afternoon doing if your time in Italy is limited. I suggest going to the nearby town of Camogli an taking the ferry to San Fruttoso, an ancient monastery which is only accessible by boat.
What a great suggestion! Thanks, Claire! We weren't sure either if the aquarium would be worth our time. We have boys that are 12 and 14 and just thought they may want a change from looking at old ruins and buildings, but I love the monastery idea!
I went to Geneva just last year in September. The ticket at that time for the aquarium was 50EUR or even 60, I don't remeber exactly. In my opinion it's very exepensive.
I enjoyed the walking and busing around the city. I got an unlimited ticket good for bus, elevator and the 3 funiculars. The town has 2 parts so to speak. One is flat and the other one is on a hill. I really enjoy the hilly part, it was amazing how they were able to build those houses up there and taking the bus all the way up was a very cool experinece. There is a place somewhere on the bus route where you can see the whole city and the port looks beautiful.
We did the aquarium in 2006 and loved it. I think young teens would find it more interesting the some of the other sights. For adults Genova is a gem especially exploring the old city which is quite close to the aquarium. We also loved the Palazzo Reale. Spectularly opulent.
