Genoa

Has anyone spent time in Genoa? We are staying in Camogli (near Portifino), and wondered where to visit from there.

Camogli is beautiful. Great sea food too. From there you can take the ferry and see San. Fruttuoso, which is only accessible by boat or by hiking in from above. The boat is about a 10 minute ride along the coast and worth it just for the views of Camogli. Genova is neat too, it's this odd combination of very old and modern, breathtakingly beautiful and at the same time has these parts that aren't so nice. Definitely worth seeing, get a book that will explain what to see and how to get there. Just taking a walk along the Lungomare makes the trip worth it. One note, parking is a nightmare, and traffic at certain times of the day just sits. Genova-Nervi-Camogli are all along this long narrow stretch of coast, it took us over an hour to drive from Camogli to Genova one Sunday evening.

Genoa is worth a visit. Gt a good map and wander through the old part. They are really narrow streets more like alleys. All quite safe and really interesting little shops. There are some good galleries too which have always been closed when I have visited. Parts are not so nice but if you stick to the old part and be careful around the station you'll be fine. You could take the train out to Nervi - it's a really lovely area out of Genoa - 3 stops on the train. When you get off the train you can go through the tunnel under the tracks and walk along the beach front promonade. It's a great walk along absolute beach front and can be quite spectacular. Nice little cafe you can stop for a coffee at too. There are also really lovely gardens that overlook the water too on the other side of the tracks that are worth a wander through. When we were there in May all the roses were out and they were just beautiful.
