What sort of a site is this?

I can open it fine; perhaps it is blocked in Switzerland .

It's the Edmonds, Washington local online news. Maybe the link doesn't work internationally. Great story!

Excerpt:
Edmonds-based European travel expert Rick Steves dropped in on the Edmonds Rotary Noon Club’s meeting last week to make a surprise announcement: He is donating the Trinity Place transitional housing complex, which he has owned and operated in partnership with the Rotary and the YWCA since 2005, to the YWCA.

“It was just shocked silence for a moment,” said Rotary President Doug Lofstrom, “but then the room burst into applause, cheering and a standing ovation.”

Thank you Rick! Doesn't personally impact me but I like to applaud the good guys. Beats the heck out of kvetching.

I read this on Facebook this morning. Kudos to Rick. Would be nice if other well off Americans followed his example.
Not necessarily donating the building, but doing what he originally did... buy it and let homeless people trying to get back on their feet live there...

What a wonderful thing to do! I've noticed for a long time that Rick has always tried to use his wealth to help the under privileged and poor. In addition to this, he also raises money every year for Bread For The World. It's really sad that other wealthy people in all countries don't practice the same altruism that Rick does (although there is at least one billionaire from the Seattle area that is also using his wealth for good).

Exactly, Susan. The first step was already incredible. Thanks for sharing the story, Michael. Makes me glad to support this place in some small way (Forum participation and book and video purchases, never taken a tour.)

As far as the link: it didn't work for me either until I turned on my VPN to U.S., then I was able to see it just fine. How funny that the Edmonds paper finds foreigners wanting to look at their site as suspicious! And interesting that it worked for you fine, Nigel. Maybe they only consider Anglophone countries friendly (given S Jackson of Canada's posting too)!!

You can also read about Rick's donation on Rick's Travel Blog on this site. Click on the About Rick tab. His blog post has photos and a video. Bravo, Rick!

I like to be positive. I think many wealthy folks do give generously to causes. Some are just more public than others. There are so many causes. I think it's good to focus on just a few to prevent burn- out or guilt. I try to find causes that are highly effective with their funds. Plus, there are many local charities that the rest of the nation doesn't know about. Well- done on housing help Rick!
