I can see that this will affect public transportation, including rail. Does anyone know for sure if the strike will also include air travel? I am planning to fly into Fiumicino from Malta on that day.

I don't think it will affect flights, but it might affect baggage handling or other travel related workers. More reason to pack light and keep your carry-on with you.
A taxi from the airport may be your only option, it's always hard to pin down exactly what will and won't run, and the taxi stand will be busier than normal.
