General Admission to Colosseum - What areas are included

I've seen all sorts of tour options for the Colosseum, but since I have the handy dandy Rick Steves' audio tour, I was thinking of just reserving a general admission ticket. What areas of the Colosseum does that give me access to? I understand there is an underground, the floor level (is that the same as first level?), second level, and third level.

If I get the gen. admission ticket, will I be missing out on anything really great? Guided tours are already booked from the online site, so my only other option is a tour company which would cost us (me and my 19 yr. old daughter) at least 105 euros.

We were there 2 weeks ago and just did general admission. This should give you access to the street level (there is a vantage platform to shoot photos of the underground) and second and third levels. That will also afford you some pictures back towards Palatine Hill as well.

You didn't ask, but the Spanish steps are 7/8 closed off for restoration. Heads up before you leg it over there ;)

Complete access to everything except the underground. You can wander all three levels until you are tired of going in circles.

Another quick question...
Has anyone taken a guided tour (ex: Walks of Italy) as well as exploring with either the Rick Steves audio and/or the purchased audio tour? How do they compre?

In our opinion, nothing compares to a live guide. You can ask question, engage in a conversation, and obtain far more information than is available either in self guide tours or audio tours. But you pay a price for that. We have used Angel tours in Rome and were pleased. As a side note, you spend thousands of dollars getting and staying there but bulk at spending a hundred dollars for a guide.

I prefer audio guides to tour guides because I can go at my own pace, start when I choose and stop when it's convenient for me. I do enough research ahead of time that I'm familiar with what I'm seeing and the audio guide just fills in the blank spots if there are any.

Last summer I booked a tour of the Colosseum and Underground online via Coopculture.it and it was great! I enjoy a live tour over an audio tour because I got the opportunity to ask questions.
