Gelato in Venice

My family and I (seven people total, ranging from 10-40) are going to stay in Venice for two nights this summer. I’d like to know if there are any recommendations for exceptional gelato shops in Venice. I have heard good things about Gelatoteca Suso, but it seems a bit touristy to me. Is it worth a visit?

We love La Mela Verde…it’s small, canal-side and has wonderful gelato. We’re looking forward to making it one of our first stops this fall! Have a wonderful trip!

Cathy, I’d better stop by there…..just to make sure it’s still open! 😉

Suso is the best. My B&B hosts told me so (he's native Venetian, she's native Californian). On the way there I stopped in a shop and mentioned to the clerk that I was going to the best gelateria in Venice, she immediately said, Suso. That was at the beginning of my 3 weeks in Italy. After that, I hardly ate any gelato, it just wasn't nearly as good! They are also eco-conscious. The spoons are biodegradable and they discourage serving in a cup (which I prefer) because too many tourists are careless with their refuse.

When I first saw this post I imagined it would go the way it did. Singular recommendations based on others recommendations and all are of the best.
How can anyone say that one place or another has the best gelato? You would have to order the exact same flavor in each place and taste it within a near time frame of the next one so you remember the taste,
Do you eat gelato every day? Multiple times? On your 4 day visit to Rome, how many times did you really eat gelato?
In reality most of us can enjoy gelato sold most anywhere. Gelato is not only the taste, but the time and place of such a treat.

Treemoss2, gelato is just like any other comparison of a food item. There are bakeries we prefer, specific restaurant dishes we like best, etc. I usually use pistachio as my standard of comparison between gelato shops, and yep, I am guilty of having at least one gelato a day! ; ). There are definitely some that are worth visiting multiple times and others that one time is enough.

Terra Gelato’s Sicilian Salted Pistachio was fantastic yesterday- in Milan.

I was looking at recent Google images and pictures from May 2022 show an option to have a cup shaped cone. Great idea!

We stayed in Dorsoduro in 2019 and enjoyed (many times!) Gelateria Nico, on the Zattere.

Agree that Nico’s on the Zattere is excellent for gelato!!

About Nico's. I mentioned it to my B&B hosts and they said that Nico, the owner, sold it after the big hit he took (along with many others) during the lock-downs. They said it just isn't the same with the new owner.

On the other hand, in one of Donna Leone's Brunetti books, she wrote that Venetians never think their favorite places are as good with new owners, even when absolutely nothing changes.

My first thought was Mela Verde and I see it already got a mention - I checked their FB page not too long ago and still open. The other is Gelateria Il Doge - they have a few shop fronts - we visited the one near our B&B in San Polo area a few too many times.

On our V-F-R trip a few years back, our RS guide told us what to look for in a "GOOD" gelato shop. That became our buzzword. He said the fluffy, beautiful displays are not the best made gelato, because GOOD gelato isn't that stiff. Look for the shops that keep the gelato in bins that are covered with lids in recessed refrigeration, because different flavors need different temperatures. So this doesn't display as well.
I have spent years researching this when in Europe- I feel that much more research is required before I can come to a definitive conclusion.
