Gelato crawl (tour)

All I hear from EVERYONE is you have to have a gelato every day. So I’m asking for your favorite gelato shops in the cities we’re visiting:

Venice,

Cinque Terre ( staying in Vernazza)

Turin

Asti

Aosta

Domodossola

Lake Maggiore.

And do you have a FAVORITE FLAVOR?

Thanks!

In Turin I enjoyed Gelateria la Romana. I always try pistachio along with any unique or specialty flavor.

I can only help with Venice...
La Mela Verde, Castello 4977
La Boutique del Gelato, Castello 5727
San Stae-Fontego delle Dolcezze, Santa Croce 1910
For a chain-type place, I've found the Amorino in San Polo to be good

Flavors. I like chocolate, so I'm a big fan of fondente. In autumn, I like a good pear gelato. I also like ginger and honey.

My fav fruity flavor has to be one in season. For example, don't choose cherries or berries in winter! In fact, a good gelateria shouldn't even serve these when out of season. Yet, they may use frozen fruits anyway.

I second Galateria Nico in Venice! All others I tasted on our last trip were in Orvieto and Rome.

Only ONE gelato per day? Our record is 3 in one day! edited: this does not mean we had 3 every day! My favorite flavor is Chocolate Hazelnut.

Near the CT, our very favorite was Basilico e Limone, in Levanto. They had a Vino Santo that still haunts me.

Just avoid the places with brilliant colors. If the pistachio is bright green, it’s not natural. Look for a grey-green pistachio and it will taste amazing.

Glomom,

Italian gelato is the best!

L’ Angola del Gelato in Stresa [Lake Maggiore] - Piazza Cadorna, 38.

Favorite flavors:
Pistachio, Chocolate, Strawberry, Coconut, Mango, and Peach (when in season)

Enjoy your trip and eat lots of gelato! 😋

Agree with Laurel - the prettier the gelato, the more it is to be avoided. The best will be unappetizing colors and plain presentation - no clever swirls and mounds. And as cala said, ONLY ONE????? I've tried many flavours, the best is still nocciole (hazelnut).

Three heavenly servings a day is a minimum in my book!

Agree with the comments that Pistachio should never be green. Even better is when flecks of pistacio are IN the gelato. Also, enjoy Bacio or gianduia. They are the same and are a mix of chocolate and hazelnut - very european! For fruit, also agree with the "in season" comment with one exception: Amarena. Amarena cherries are "cured" in syrup, so you can get them any time of year and this flavor is one not to be missed if it is done right. I never thought I would give up on my go-to favorites until trying this. It is very hard to get in the US, so take a gamble (if you are agreeing to the 3-a-day approach, no harm no foul) and try it!

If choosing purely in terms of my favorite flavors I'd go with chocolate, coffee or coconut (or some combination thereof), but in Italy I think the strength is in the fruit and nut ice creams. They depend on top-quality, natural ingredients rather than a super-high fat content. I think there's a larger quality difference there than with something like vanilla, chocolate or coffee.

Thank you! Your responses have been great! But seriously, three a day!? I’ll roll home. :). I’m keeping a tally of your favorites and will post it when I’m done collecting. So far, pistachio is in the lead.

Three - or four or more - in a day isn't a big deal.

Gelato is much less fattening than American over processed and high overrun ice cream. Truly.

Also the portions are not necessarily huge - one ball in a cup (or cone) or two - and while exquisite in some places, cooling and great fun, doesn't have to pile on the pounds.

And of course, you will be walking lots. And lots.

Lemon ( limone ) is the base flavor for judging anybody's gelato. It's refreshing, and usually a bit tart and not too sweet.

You can usually get a small taste of a flavor or two, to help you decide what to get. If you opt for more than one scoop, you can make for some interesting combinations.
