Gelato Crawl in Rome!

Looking for contenders all over the city as we sample our way through Roma with our kids! Any recommendations to share?

If anyone has been to sorbetteria la Castiglione in Bologna, our favorite Gelato ever, you'll know we are serious about this research :)

Grazie mille!

Our experience is already 5 years old. We found Gelateria Origini walking from Piazza Venezia towards Pantheon. They had a wide variety of flavours while our kids loved the Nutalla ice cream (that was too sweet for me). We all liked it a lot, thus we came back the other day.

I searched my photo archive to find the name and location.

La Sorbetteria di Castiglione in Bologna is definitely superior. I made three late-night runs there this last October when we were staying a few blocks away, and got €15 take-out containers, trying several of their amazing flavors over the week. Their only chocolate is dark chocolate, so they don’t mess around with intensity.

So for Rome, both in the Testaccio neighborhood:

  1. Panna&Co, at Via Marmorata 115. Outstanding gelato, and it’s kept in metal containers with lids, not exposed in a colorful display behind a glass case. The name translates to “Cream & Co.,” and like lots of places in Rome, we found they are happy to top your gelato with a dollop of whipped cream. While that’s not my preference, they said that more than half of their customers, primarily Italians, like their gelato that way. As good as whipped cream is, I think it would just get in the way of the gelato.

  2. Bar Giolitti, four blocks to the north, at Via Amerigo Vespucci 35. They’re an old-time, very established gelateria. They do exceptional quality over quantity, and only have a few flavors at any one time (maybe 10, maybe 12?), and they’re not always the same as the varieties sell out.

Come il Latte is my favorite Roman gelateria. It is not too far from the American Embassy where I worked and worth the trip. There are some good restaurants around there, too, neighborhood/local places.

Another contender in my top picks is Gelateria del Teatro on Via dei Coronari.

If you get over to the Trastevere, just off the Piazza della Scala, there is Gelateria ala Scala Trastevere. We have always enjoyed it, seems small batch made, different flavors, and very good.

We also were impressed with Otaleg, just down a street from Piazza di Santa Maria, also in the Trastevere. Truly an "Artisanal" shop with a modern bent. They have a website here: https://www.otaleg.com/ if you want to whet your appetite.
