Will I need a special credit card (I plan to use my Amex card) to get gas and use on toll roads in Italy? I keep hearing they will only accept a "chip" card which I never heard of.

Bring your debit card, withdraw $$$ from any local ATM ,and be prepared to use cash at times. Your Credit card will be accepted at all "attended" gas stations, and in certain "attended"anes on toll roads. We always carry cash, just to be on the safe side. "Chip and Pin" cards are "active" credit cards (used in the EU and many other countries) that have a "computer chip" buried in them. The chip contains data that is used in processing transactions. Many times they need a PIN number to function. "Usually', our old fashioned US cards can be used, but most of the time a local attendant has to input them.
