Next spring my wife and I are going to the Gargano area for the first time. We will be there 4 days. Does anyone have advice whether to stay in Vieste or Peschici? We will probably be there in late May. We are both older than 55, in decent shape and prefer small towns. It's hard to determine on google maps, but it looks like it is easier to get from the beach to the historic town on foot (and vice versa) in Vieste - but I'm not sure. thanks

I've only stayed in Vieste, with our tour group, and we happened to be at Hotel Seggio, which has a pool open in summer and access to a break-front protected, shallow area of sea water. We enjoyed the town. In both towns, the older section is on a hill and it looks like about a 1 km walk from those upper areas to the beaches, but Vieste has beach options in two directions.

We stayed in Vieste and made a day trip to Peschici, which you should have plenty of time to do if you're there four days. (And should do, I might add. Peschici is a lovely spot.) We were on foot as well (public transportation). My recollection is that the beach was closer to the historic town in Peschici, but you've probably looked at a map more recently than I have! At any rate, it's very doable in either town. I'm guessing Vieste has more restaurant selection than Peschici.
