i'm heading to the peninsula with my daughter by train, bus, etc. Which town is the best to use as "base camp" for seeing caves, beaches, etc and with easiest travel.

pat, My suggestion for a great "base camp" on the Gargano Peninsula would be Vieste. It's a beautiful town, and there are boat tours available there to see caves, etc. Have a look at this Lonely Planet website for some suggestions on how to get around that part of Italy. If you're travelling by train, there are direct trains from Rome to Foggia (time as short as 2H:51M), and from there use the Sita Bus to Vieste. You can check Trip Advisor for Hotels. I stayed at Hotel Seggio and would definitely recommend it (be sure to watch the video on their website). Happy travels!
