We (a group of 6) are planning on staying near Riva del Garda for 2 months across the regatta period, Apr-May.
Would it be best to get in contact with a local real estate agent (any recommendations?) to secure a property or are there online resources that specialise in accommodation for this period of time?

Two month is not long term rental. For vacation rentals you can use AirBnB, VRBO, Booking. Wimdu etc.. there are also Italian sites like CaseVacanze.it.
For finding long term rentals one would use idealista.it or mioaffitto.it or many others, but those would probably be leases for a year or longer.
Also, if for 2023 you may be a bit late as well.
I have found that booking.com works very well for apartment rentals in Italy. Communications and payment are very easy if you rent through booking.com, or you can find the official website for the individual listings you like and rent directly from the property.
But their rental periods are limited tom30 days so you would have to do two separate rentals.
Here is an example of one I found for the month of April in Riva del Garda. There are many more that were listed for the search.
