Garda Link Verona to Malcesine

Since a ticket for Garda Link can only be purchased in combination with the train is it possible to treat that portion like a regionale ticket? For example, I purchase the train ticket with Garda Link GL017. Am I expected to take that bus or is it possible to take one of the later busses?

Current problem/concern: Will arrive Verona with skis and a boot bag that we would like to check into storage (Bounce looks probable). It means we will need time in Verona to accomplish getting them to the storage area and back for the bus and 23-25 minutes isn’t enough time. We would leave them in storage for the next 3 weeks as we continue our trip through Italy, then return to Verona once we arrive back in Bologna to pick them up. Fly out from Bologna.

Yes, there probably are other possibilities but this one is on my mind right now. Trip isn’t until spring 2024!!

My first thought is, why are you bringing skis to Europe? Besides the expense airlines now charge for hauling skis, you have now admitted that they will be a burden for the remainder of the trip. You can rent skis there for a lot less than the cost in the USA.

Hello SJS, I may just be out of the loop but do you have a reference to the "Garda Link" offer?

You can catch two buses directly from the Verona train station to Malcesine and the cost isn't prohibitive so if the ticket is too restrictive you can just catch the bus on your own.

LINES 162, 163, 164, 185 Verona - Garda (change)
LINE 484 Garda - Malcesine

Obviously that's a long way out so you have some time to figure it out,

Yup, Sam, I’ve asked the same question and I definitely have the same concerns. It will be my husbands’ skis. He is not inclined to rent skis as he is an expert skier and really wants his own equipment. In the beginning he was only going to take his boots, but now he wants his skis too. Still open for more discussion for sure!!! As for what the airlines charge-what info can you give me there?

And @hiredman-I forgot about the other bus service. I have looked at it previously. Therefore if we do end up with skis in Verona, it will be easier to book train travel without the connection and take one of the other bus lines. Thank you.

Since I posted, I’ve looked at transportation from Torino through Bologna to Verona. There is a good chance we could drop the skis with a friend in Bologna taking care of any concern.

Still want to know more about costs of transporting them with us without my having to dig around on the BA site. Thx.

As an example, on United, Seattle to Bologna, a set of skis, poles, and boots (in a separate bag) weighing under 50 lb total, will cost $100 each way if you are traveling standard economy where you get your first bag free. That is pretty standard with other major airlines. But, hey, if you fly 1st class, they are free.

When I go to Europe, I take my boots, helmet, and a set of ski clothes in my carry on bag. A lot of airlines limit you to 18 lb for the carry-on bag, but I manage to make the weight. If you carry it as a back-pack, in my experience, you will not be asked to put it in a sizer.

We do travel premium, but not business or first. If wishes were horses…….

Good to know. Thanks. Will certainly figure in if it’s that much just what will we have to forego for food, etc. He’s not much of one to forego anything!!!

At least we have a few months to make a final decision.

Looks like on BA you get 2 checked bags included with Premium Economy, although the boot bag counts separately, so take as a carry-on. I do that so I know I can ski the next day even if the baggage gets delayed.
Where are you planning on skiing?

I guess I don't really understand the question - or - why the title of the post is about trains and not about skis. Am I wrong to suggest shipping the skis to your skiing destination?

@sam. He will be skiing in the La Plagne area of Haute Savoie- so Les Arcs and others there, then I imagine a day or so in Tignes and also possibly Val d’Isere. Meeting up with a cousin who resides in France and has a place in La Plagne-Tarentaise. 8-10 days of skiing.
And thank you for the BA info. I had to access something else this morning so did dive in. Boot bag is definitely carry on!

More info as the heading could be misleading (dpoweron). We will fly into Lyon, stay a few days, then travel to the valley-most likely staying in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Next will be train to Torino where we will stay a few days. Then the trip to Malcesine-train/bus. Because of the bags we will book business class tickets for the legs that we need the space. Torino to Malcesine (Verona) can be done with either a change in Milan or Bologna, hence the idea of dropping the equipment in Bologna with the friend.

After Malcesine, it’s a bit undecided but we will have an additional 3 weeks.
Currently planning two trips , so I’m a bit addled.
