I was made aware of the garbage problem in Naples a number of weeks ago and am having a hard time finding the current info on the situation. I am traveling to Sorrento at the end of March and am wondering if the problem is just in Naples or in the surrounding areas as well. If just in Naples, is there a "foul wind" that blows across the bay to the Sorrento coast?
I just returned from Naples a few days ago and trash problem is HUGE! It is piled all over and it is as high as the buildings. We only noticed it in and immediately around Naples. We drove from the Pompeii area to the Navy base 2 days to visit friends and the trash was visible for the whole 50 minute drive. They are now burning some of the piles and the smoke can be see in the distance. He says no end in sight at the moment. I can't say I smelled it as we drove through. Hope it's ok when you get there, because it was massive there now.
That sounds pretty bad. What would it be like in a few weeks if it's to that point already? Which direction is the Navy base from Naples. I wasn't planning on spending anytime in the city, just Pompeii, Sorrento area and Capri. We are traveling by train to that area and I'm sure that we would encounter the garbage at the station. In your opinion, would you travel to that area if you where in our shoes, or would you make new plans? The smell is not the only thing that I am worried about, the disease and toxic smoke as well.
WE were there last summer during that garbage strike. They were burning the piles and the smoke was very stinky. While it was visible from Sorrento - it did not smell there. The smoke made for some great sunsets!!! Pompeii was stinky and we did not go up Vesuveous because of it.
Just got an e-mail from my wife's family who is about an hour east of Napoli. It's a huge problem across the region now. They have completely run out of places to put the garbage. Smell depends on the area, but no mention of a larger "foul wind".
But then again, I'll happly take a smelly day in Sorrento over a great day here :)
