Gallo Matese, Italy

Hello, I have recently discovered that my family came from Gallo Matese, Italy. It is a very small hill town about 70km northeast of Naples. I was wondering if anyone has been there or knows much about it. I really don't have much family to ask since they have died young. I have searched but found very little online. I would like to go there as well when I am in Italy next year but not really sure about how to get there without taking an expensive taxi ride. Thanks

First, I know nothing about the town mentioned, but when faced with a problem like this, there are some common thing you can do to work out a solution. The town is small, in the mountains, and has no rail service. It does likely have Bus service. From there you can search "bus service to Gallo Matese Italy" or look for a likely larger town with rail service, and search for bus service between the two. Usually you will get some hits. From that, I did find a site for the town that talks about how to get there: http://www.gallomatese.info/how_to_arrive.html It has links to the local bus line, CLP, indicating several routes that would work. The only drawback sometimes is there may be limited service, meaning you may have to plan on spending at least one night, probably two, for a visit. Finding a larger town nearby that has a train service and a rental office and getting a car is another option.

Joseph, We also have relatives in Gallo and have traveled there 3 times over the years. One of my sisters traveled there for her first time this summer along with some of her family. The first time we went we were young and took the bus, it was an adventure. The next two times we rented a car in Monte Cassino, where the train stops. It's a beautiful place and worth visiting by any means. I'll bet you can find some of your family members living there. There is a beautiful 4 room bed-and-breakfast run by some very friendly locals. What is your family name? Maybe we are related. Feel free to contact me for more information. Don Rocchio

Don, I know I still have family in Italy I am not sure if they are any still in Gallo. My family came to Gallo around 1750 and my portion of the family left in 1909. We still had family living there for a awhile I know. I do know I have some family near Naples but I have never met them. My great grandfather Vincenzo Martino (went by middle name John when he came to US and dropped the "o" during WWII) He came to Kokomo Indiana and his brother Giovanni Giuseppe Martino (known as James here) came a few years after. James kept the Martino last name my side is all Martin know. I know that Giovanni Martino married into the Rocchio family and my great grandfather married a girl from the states. So my family name is Martino, but I know that it isn't a native name to Gallo we just married in and stayed a few centuries. It would be nice to know more about my family and where they came before Gallo.
