Is it necessary to buy the tickets in advance?
We'll be there in August.

Advance tickets are always a good idea in summer in Italy and especially in Venice.
Yes! Otherwise you will spend precious time in a long line while those with timed entry waltz in.
Thanks.
I purchased our tickets
My experience (in September 2022 and 2024) has been that the Accademia is quite lightly visited. No ticket line whatsoever. At the time of this writing (4 AM Venice time), it appears none of today's entry times at the Accademia are sold out. However, there's no harm in buying the Accademia ticket ahead of time if you're certain the visit will actually happen, and it is always possible a traveler might arrive at a museum right behind a large tour group and need to wait for the issuance of a few dozen tickets.
The Venetian art museum where you are likely to encounter a line is the Guggenheim. My advice is to buy the Guggenheim ticket a bit ahead of time (one day might be sufficient, but I'm not sure about that). Crowding should be expected at the Guggenheim, unlike conditions at the Accademia.
