The Rialto bridge is completely covered with scaffolding and the dome of Saint Marks as well
And in Rome the Trevi Fountain is fenced off and Emory of water, and the Spanish Steps are closed for renovation.
It is always something----these precious antiquities need maintenance. We were in Venice a few weeks ago and San Marco was actually more uncovered than it was on our last visit. And the interior is unaffected.
The Rialto Bridge restoration mainly affects traffic across---some lanes are closed to access so the remaining areas seem more crowded than usual. Other than that, it is not a big deal.
Latest word on the Trevi Fountain is that the re-opening is set for November 3. No promises, of course. But the picture on the webcam looks like it's just about ready.
We were at the Trevi a couple of weeks ago. The Nov 3 re-opening has been cancelled and now seems to
be sometime early Jan 2016.
OH...won't it look wonderful when done? It was our third visit to Venice before we saw the brIdge of sighs uncovered. First trip it was totally covered(2008). Second trip it was uncovered but the sides of the doges palace were undercover (2010). It wasn't until 2012 we got to see it in all its restored glory. The Rialto was looking a little hard every time we've seen it so it needs some restoring.
rleb9, will you please share the link which contains your source about the delayed January unveiling of the restored fountain?
Kathy - cannot share a link. Saw a discussion of the 2016 Jubilee (Dec 2015 to Nov 2016) on Italian TV in Rome around 10/13.
During that discussion an update on the Trevi restoration was offered. The speaker said they hoped for Dec when the Jubilee
begins - but it may not be until after Jan 1st. That is all I know. Everything changes.... ;-)
Thanks. It's just weird 'cause I can't find anything that states the inauguration date as other than Nov. 3. Will keep an eye for people with upcoming trips.
