Fun, romantic weekend trip from Rome?

Hello! My husband will be in Rome for work in late October and I will join him! We only have a weekend together to get out of town (start late Friday afternoon, have to fly out from Rome Monday morning) but would love some ideas of a car-free weekend trip we could take from Rome. Nothing too high-end. We are pretty active and would love to avoid some of the over-touristed spots as well. Any ideas are welcome!!! Thank you!

I too would suggest you stay in Rome. An alternative would be to take a fast train (reservation required) up to Venice for the weekend.

Look at Bolsena, Frascati or some other Castel Gandolfo.

Hi

I must admit that to move outside Rome without car is not an easy task, and if you don't know Rome I would suggest to enjoy the city. Otherwise the suggestion is to move by train (fastest ones) to Florence or Naples (both about 1 hour time)

Afraid I must disagree with Nino here: the trains in Italy go oodles of places, and are very easy to use. I am a little curious why, with only a weekend, you are interested in leaving Rome? Have you been there before?

A concern is your Monday morning flight: how early on Monday? And what day/time are you flying into Rome at the beginning of the weekend?

I also wonder, why leave Rome? Unless you have been there before?? If you must leave, I love Orvieto! It is fairly quick, about an hour by train. It is a quiet little town, a little touristy in the day, as most towns, but after hours, very quaint.

I agree with Mathy about the trains - very easy to use.

I think Nino meant that with a car there are lots of countryside and small town locations in the Rome surroundings that aren't as easy to explore with trains or buses. Although one can go anywhere in Italy with public transport, however some very romantic countryside locales, such as the Castelli Romani or Colli Albani or the lakes or the Coastal areas near the Circeo, would be more easily explored by car.

By train, Orvieto is good. With a car I would recommend the Colli Albani/Castelli Romani.

Wow! So many thanks to all of you!!! this is all so very helpful!! And you are getting me thinking about staying in Rome…but our thinking was that my husband has never been to Italy (I have been to the north, twice) and we will be in Rome all week (M-F)….so we thought a weekend someplace a little different to get out of the city and see other sights would be nice. This give us a lot to think about..stay in Rome, rent a car, or try to do it all by train! So many options!

we will be in Rome all week

Ok, that changes things quite a bit. Your initial post sounded as if you were only joining him for the weekend, and so would have a VERY short time in Italy. If you've both been able to do considerable sightseeing over the week, then a different weekend location would be fine. Then again, if he isn't able to see much of Rome because of his business duties, he may want to visit some of the attractions he'd otherwise miss, or just enjoy some leisure time in the city.

Local trains in italy allow to reach a lot of places but aren't fast and if there is not a direct connection you could lost a lot of time. Since you have only a week-end, time is an important issue I assume. Otherwise you can reach in few hours place such as Siena, Pisa, Sorrento, Amalfi, Perugia, etc.

Moreover, if your husband will work during the week, he will have very few time to visit if you are looking for museums, sites, churches, etc. Please consider that just the Ostia Antica site, that you can reach in 20 minutes by underground from rome could require half a day to be visited

You can take a day trip to Orvieto or you could go for the weekend and stay in a B&B or hotel there.

again, this is all so helpful!! sounds like 1) stay in Rome, 2) Ovieto; or 3) Castelli Romani are the top recommendations! we cannot go wrong!
