Have planned a trip to Sorrento in October. We will be there for seven days. Besides the usual things, e.g., Naples, Capri, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, are there any other places we should plan on seeing?
Do Rick's walking tour in Sorrento, and hike the trail from Ravello down to Amalfi. Suggest you check the ferry schedules now for October--not sure if the one's to the Amalfi coast towns are still running.
If you're a hiker, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) above the Amalfi Coast is amazing. It's not terribly strenuous, but you'll definitely break a sweat. It's one of my favorite places in Italy.
Herculaneum is also worth a visit. It's close to Pompeii and is a lot more compact and intact. If you don't mind being on your feet for a while, you can see both Pompeii and Herculaneum in a day.
Paestum, about an hour south of Amalfi, is well worth a visit for its 3 huge, intact temples.
We live in Naples and spend a lot of time on the coast. My favorite place on the Coast is Ravello, high on the cliff above Amalfi. The belvedere at Villa Cimbrone has one of the most breathtaking views anywhere. Cumpa Cosimo is a great place for lunch. Try the house pasta sampler, and the lady who runs the place will make sure you don't go away hungry.
Ciao,
Meredith
You already have a pretty full week planned, but here's another vote for Ravello, one of the most beautiful places you'll ever see. Just get yourself to the town of Amalfi and then take the bus up the hill to Ravello.
Geetings from Sorrento. How about Herculaneum, went there this afternoon, or the bus from Pompeii up to Vesuvius, if it's still running in Oct. Also a trip to Ischia and a dip in a thermal pool? There is a direct boat service from Sorrento to Ischia each morning returning about 5pm.
When in October are you going? In mid-October Sorrento holds a fish festival on the Marina. It is a food festival celebrating seafood and the food is awesome. 5 euros buys you a plate of food and a glass of wine. I think I had two plates of food. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
There's also Herculaneum, Paestum would be a day trip. A lot depends on what you like to do.
Thank you all for your wonderful ideas. I knew I could depend on this board for input. We are going to be in Sorrento starting October 7th, so am hoping all the boats are still in operation. One other question - does anyone know the best place to shop for cameos?
Lucky you, how about Ravello and relaxing in Sorrento a day.
We use Borriello, a shop at the Cathedral end of Corso Italia in Sorrento. They are a family firm from Torre del Greco which is the traditional centre for cameo production in the area. Also sell coral and turquoise items. The shop sells gold chains for the cameos by design and weight, gold in Sorrento is by tradition 18 carat. My favourites are the grey/blue cameos.
We agree with your recommendation for Villa Cimbrone. The mountain side views are amazing.
