we are in spello, umbria for a month this fall, and would like suggestions about whether to do a day or two day trip over to the coast?adriatic, where to go there, what to see, etc, tx, nicholas from santa cruz
Will you have a car? If so, Cesenatico may be of interest. About 2hrs from Spello.
People go to the Adriatic to look at the Sea! In Fall time the Coastal towns may be shut down in part. The Adriatic is mostly open and hopping in the summer months as tourists from other parts of Europe descend on the coastal towns.
Early Fall the towns may still be fully open. Late Fall, the towns are more likely partly open, meaning you can still find places on the waterfront where you can sit outside and have caffe' and pastry, lunch and supper, even if you have to wear your winter coat!
This past November 2014 I watched the morning sun light up the Sea as I enjoyed breakfast on the terrace of a ristorante on the beach. I lodged at the Hotel Gabbiano behind the Porto San Giorgia train station and a few meters from the Sea. The Hotel served breakfast every morning, but I was drawn to the sandy terrace on the Sea.
Going from West to East, Trenitalia goes to the major hub Ancona in Le Marche, or farther North to Pesaro. Once East you can take more trains up and down the Adriatic coast. I have only traveled the length of Le Marche on these coastal trains and loved every minute as the tracks are nearly in the Sea! The water has been known to cover the tracks, delaying trains.
If you drive there is the inland Autostrada, A14, that connects coastal towns all along the Adriatic, and the local Strada Statale, SS16, that goes through the coastal towns all along the Adriatic coast.
The best city to visit on the coast not far from Spello (2hr drive) is the Marche's capital: Ancona
The best sea coastline is the Mt. Conero Park area, just south of Ancona.
The most beautiful village is Corinaldo (slightly inland, north of Ancona, near Senigallia).
Also other beautiful cities to be visited in the region (although not on the coast): Urbino, Ascoli Piceno.
Do a Google Image search and see what you like.
We especially liked Urbino and the Frasassi caves in Le Marche, though neither is on the coast.
