Does anyone have any information on how to get to the museum and ruins and how to choose a really good tour? My husband is a high school history teacher and this will be a highlight of my husband's trip to Italy.
Are you asking about Paestum? If so Paestum is down the coast from Salerno and is best reached by train from Naples. From Sorrento you would need to travel to Naples and then down to Paestum. If you are staying in Naples or somewhere north of Sorrento that would probably be the time to do this side trip.
I guess in theory you could take a ferry from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast and then onto Salerno but that is slowest and more cumbersome way to do that and train is infinitely easier and more dependable.
As for a guide we didn't use one - you might check the site for more information. The museum is (partially) open again and they may have docent tours or something similar.
Hope that helps,

Take the Circumvesuviana train back to Naples and then catch a train from there. Leave early, it's about 2.5 hours one way.
Haven’t done it but I recall a way to walk between stations in Pompeii without returning to Naples but not sure if it saves time. I think my determination was that it was too awkward to go from Sorrento to Paestum on a day trip, by awkward I mean a lot of time for not that much distance.
Just to be sure, you mean the (mostly) Roman museum of Pompeii in Naples and the Greek ruins in Paestum, not the Roman ruins in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis. ... ?
