from Rome to Naples, which airport is best

I am flying into Italy from the U.S. in April to visit my daughter in Naples. Which airport would be best and what is the best transportation option to Naples from the airport?

Why fly into Rome? Which airline are you flying in on? Where are you located? You can easily fly the larger foreign-based airlines to their home countries and then transfer to a flight that goes non-stop to Naples. No need for Rome unless you are on Alitalia. For example, you fly Lufthansa from a number of U.S. airports to Munich, walk over to their domestic terminal and fly non-stop to Naples. Air France, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Alitalia all do this. U.S. based airlines don't do this. What they can do is transfer you to one of their EU partner airlines and they can do it.

If you must enter through Rome-FCO, the airline you are on may have a partner airline that you can transfer onto to fly to Naples. I believe that Alitalia is the only airline that can do this non-stop. Meridiana and Iberia can do it but Meridiana will take you to Sicily first and Iberia will take you to Barcelona first.

Barcelona. Now there's and idea. As an alternative, you can fly into Barcelona and then take the Spanish budget airline Vueling www.vueling.com non-stop to Naples. Vueling has 2 non-stop flights a day to Naples from Barcelona.

Or, if you have trouble finding a local flight to Naples, you can take the Leonardo Express train to the Roma-Termini train station (14Euro) where you will change trains to a very high-speed train to Naples (43Euro one-way).

Where are you flying from? You didn't enter your home location.
Naples has an international airport with regular flights to various European hubs such as Paris CDG or Frankfurt and Munich in Germany. If you fly through those hubs with AirFrance or Lufthansa, Naples is an option. There are no direct flights from North America (although I don't know in which continent you are) to Naples, except for a seasonal Meridiana flight from JFK which operates once a week. Naples airport is very close to the city center, a taxi would not be expensive, although there is also a bus going to the central station.
If you fly to Rome, then you wouldn't take a plane from Rome to Naples. Although Alitalia has 3 daily flights to Naples, Rome and Naples are only 70 min from each other by train. Therefore the best option would be to take a Leonardo Express train from Rome Airport to Rome Termini, which is the central station (32 min), then a high speed train from Rome to Naples (70 min).

Thanks. I guess I had not checked into the option of flying directly to Naples. I will be leaving from Nebraska. I will look into the suggestion to switch to a European airline and go directly to Naples.

dane,

You might consider adding your home location to your Forum Profile. It makes it easier to offer more specific suggestions based on location.

We've cracked the code. You're in Omaha. We see your other message.

When I've booked travel to Italy, I investigate several airports to arrive at the best value (time vs. money). The last time that I was in Italy, we flew into Rome but out of Naples.

I agree - try to fly into Naples to reduce complexity. You're not going anywhere direct from Omaha, anyway :-)

However, you may end up with a deal that makes sense to fly into Rome and take the train to Naples. If I was going to save >$300 or so by flying into Rome, I'd deal with the train. It just all depends on what you're up for.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am new to this forum, and will try to be more specific in the future. I did add Nebraska as my location.
