From Rome to Cinque Terre

We will be arriving in Rome airport FCO around noon. Would it be advisable to travel directly to Cinque Terre or should we overnight in Rome? How long does it take to travel to Cinque Terre by Train from the airport FCO?
Thank you.

If you are arriving in Rome from across the Atlantic It is only advisable if you can make one of the daily trains that run directly high speed to La Spezia Centrale (that is the gateway stop town to the 5 towns along the Cinque Terre) from Rome Termini. One of the trains takes 3 hours and 50 minutes direct from Rome Termini. But first you still have to get from the airport to Rome Termini on the train or by taxi or by bus whatever way.

Moreover it depends on when your flight actually arrives in Rome. Otherwise I would just wait to the next day if getting of a long plane ride and then having to take a long train ride while not familiar with how to navigate the train station in Rome.

Blue,

Noon is still relatively early so in the same situation I'd probably go directly to the Cinque Terre. Which of the five towns are you staying in?

Your trip will require 32 minutes from the airport to Roma Termini via the Leonardo Exoress (DON'T forget to validate!), about 3H:45M to La Spezia Centrale (assuming you can connect with one of the direct trains) and 10-15 minutes from there to whichever town you're staying in.

For me that would be preferable to wasting a night in Rome. Of course that will depend on how well you tolerate jet lag.

You can buy tickets for the entire trip at the FCO rail station, either from a Kiosk or the staffed ticket office. You can check the rail solutions on the Trenitalia website.
