from rome airport to rome termini

What is the BEST way to travel between the airport and hotel on arrival. We want the best, but not the most expensive, although on our first day, we may want to splurge for direct transport via hotel's vehicle.

How many are in your party and how much luggage will you have? If 4 people, the taxi will be cheaper, if your luggage will fit. If 2 people, the train is not all that confusing, just don't let anyone buy your ticket for you. It comes about every half hour. We had way too much luggage, but still managed to get it all onto the train (this year we are traveling MUCH lighter, thanks to a Rick Steves Packing Light Seminar). We had to RUN for our connection, and would not have made it except for the help of a young man with a cart -- another thing people say to avoid. (10 Euros -- well worth it!). But with a hotel near the termini, no problem. Check with your hotel, because there are some on the other side of the tracks and you can't cross for blocks. This summer, we are traveling with friends, little luggage and will likely get a cab to our hotel near the termini. When the two of us leave to go home, we will take the train.

Karen, Actually, the trip from FCO to Termini is very easy via the Leonardo Express. There are ample signs directing passengers to the airport rail station. Once you arrive there, you may find it a bit "chaotic", but after all, "it's Italy!" Have a look at the Ron In Rome website for an excellent description of the process. You can buy tickets for the train either from a Kiosk (€14) or from a staffed ticket window (€15). Prior to boarding the train, YOU MUST validate your ticket in the yellow machine or face the possibility of a hefty fine (which will be collected on the spot!). Trains depart about every half hour and it's about a 35 minute, relaxing trip. You'll arrive at Termini on one of the "far" tracks, Binario 26 or 27 as I recall. It will take you 5-10 minutes to walk to the front of the station, as there will be HORDES of people in front of you moving in both directions. When you arrive at the station, walk right out the front doors (the tracks will be behind you). As soon as you step outside, you'll see the Taxi's. I usually prefer to take a Taxi when I'm hauling my gear, but usually walk back to the station after I "learn" the neighborhood. Which Hotel are you staying in? Happy travels!

You have answered your own question! The BEST way is by vehicle airport to hotel, especially if your hotel is more than 5 mins from the termini station and if you have never been to Rome before. Rome Taxi is Euro 48 or Euro 50 (I have heard both) and they will also take you from airport to hotel. There are shuttle buses which cost around Euro 30 that serve most hotels but you often have to wait while they wait for other flights.

BTW you'd help yourself to review the Ron in Rome website before you go. Fabulous and insightful information from a frequent Helpline poster and connoisseur of all things Rome.

Yes, I have lots of stuff already downloaded on my RAZR. Our hotel is said, by previous travelers, to be only a 5 min walk from termini, but I have heard taking the trains for the first time can be confusing (!?). so, correct, on the first day, ok to take a private hire, but after, we probably can use the train?? or bus ? Isn't there a good bus/ shuttle?

Just the 2 of us with not much luggage ( I, too, have been reading up on packing and light luggage for airlines). We are staying at the Aberdeen and others have said it's a 5 minute walk and according to the map it looks fine.
thank you for your help!

Karen, Hotel Aberdeen is awesome! The walk will probably take a bit longer than 5 minutes until you "learn the way", but it's not far. When you go through the large "Carriage Doors", Aberdeen is to your right (there's a different Hotel to the left). Cheers!

We used Romecabs when we arrived at FCO. Wonderful to not worry about anything. Just give him your hotel address and they take you right there. Definitely check out RoninRomes site....really great!!
Will answer many questions you might have.
