From Rome airport to convent near Vatican

I will be traveling with a group of 5 friends. We will arrive in Rome about 8 a.m. and since the convent where we will be staying is just west of St. Peter's (side closest to airport), we would prefer to go directly to our lodging rather than going all the way in to the train station and heading back west by bus/metro. We could get two taxis. But what would be better is a shuttle van. Is any such thing available to get us from the airport to our convent lodging (located between Trastevere and Vatican City)?

Probably a toss up. The fixed taxi rate is 40E up to four. So two taxi split between 5 is 16E. It would be difficult to find anything much cheaper and you the convenience of door to door with the taxi. You could contact Rome cabs and see what they would offer for five.

I am looking into the same thing actually, I am renting an apartment near the vatican. The owner of the apartment said he could arrange a private car for four of us for 70 euros. I thought the 40 euro set cab price was only to the historic center of Rome. Is it good all the way to the Vatican?

The private car for 70 euros looks good to me.

The 40E is good for the Vatican. Anything within the old city walls which includes the Vatican.

Carol: I used to work @ CNH before retiring. You can just catch ground transportation when you hit the Rome Airport (FCO). They can put all of you into a van and take you directly to your convent/hotel. Chances are the sisters will stow your luggage, and send you on your way to the tourist sights. (It may be too early to check into your rooms.) Most individuals would travel by train @ E5.80 each way, and then catch a bus or cab to their hotels. With 5 travelers, it's just easier and less nerve racking to get ground transportation into the city and back to the airport. You should consider mass transit multi-day tickets to move around within the city by subway and buses. Have a great trip! We'll be there Easter weekend.

I'd agree that a private shuttle might be your best option for 5-6 folks and their luggage to the Vatican area. Not ALL of the Vatican area is inside the Fixed Taxi Rate Zone. See the link for a map of the zone if you're considering that option. Much of the area SW of the Vatican is NOT covered by the agreement. You could take a train... but you'd have to ride the The FR1 Metropolitan from the FCO Train Station and get off at the Roma Trastevere Station. That train is currently priced at €8 and it would take about 25-30 minutes. There you would have to switch platforms and catch the FR5 train to the Roma San Pietro station. You could do this ticket for €1. In fact, you could use an ATAC metro/bus ticket for this short route. It's only one stop. But from there you'd have to hike to your accommodations as taxis are often scarce at the station and only the 64 bus stops at this train station... so I just don't think the train is your best option based on the location of your accommodations. The Lungotevere (main street along the river) is also one-way against your traffic needs so bus routes would require multiple changes. Again, I'm liking the private shuttle more and more!

I would write to your convent and ask about leaving your luggage if check-in is unavailable. Some of the smaller ones in town so not have luggage storage facilities and better to know that up front and not after the shuttle pulls away. From where you'll be staying you'll be riding primarily buses. There's no metro SW of the Vatican but there are plenty of buses to Largo Argentina and the centro area.
