We will be in Rio Maggiore and are interested to travel to Lucca, have a look around, ride bikes on the wall. Have only seen itineraries starting in Lucca and going out to CT.
Any recommendations for our "reverse commute"?

Train through Viareggio to Lucca and then come back. You can rent bikes just inside the city wall.

Catherine, The trip from the C.T. to Lucca is VERY easy. I travelled that route last year. As the previous reply mentioned, there's usually one change in Viareggio. I can't remember the duration of the trip, but you can check the Trenitalia website for details. When you arrive in Lucca, it will take 10-15 minutes to walk from the station and then through one of the "portals" in the wall. It's very easy! Happy travels!
