From Naples to Pompeii & Positano in one day - can it be done???

We are going on a cruise in July and will arrive in Naples at 7am and have to be back on the ship by 4pm. We would dearly love to see Pompeii and Positano on the Amalfi coast. Is it possible and what would be the best way to do this? Thank you for your comments in advance.

Positano would really be pushing it to the limit. Pompeii is easily do-able. However, instead of Positano maybe you could spend some time in Sorrento which is just a short little 15 minute train ride from Pompeii. From Sorrento you can also get to the Isle of Capri and the Blue Grotto.

Pompeii is doable, depends on how much walking you want to do. Be aware that there are VERY few places to sit down there. Most of the artifacts taken from Pompeii are in a museum in Naples, so allow time to see that if you can. Wear a hat and use sunscreen.

I don't think you could get to Positano, but Pompeii is easy to get to via the Circumvesiviana train. There is some info about doing this from a cruise ship at http://messages.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=63129

I've stayed in Sorrento, lovely spot for a home base to explore the region. But I don't see it as that much of a destination; it doesn't have the cliffs and sights of Positano, Amalfi, etc. It has an old quarter, nice restaurants, etc. so its nice to wander around in. But you might be disappointed if you think it will look like the other towns perched on the cliff.
