From Milan to Venice to Florence

We are planning to leave Milan , spend the day in Venice and in the evening crash in Florence the same day. Any suggestions?

Be sure your shoes are laced on well and double knotted.

And whoever came up this plan should prepare an answer now to the inevitable question, "Why did this seem to be a good idea?", because by the end of the day someone will ask it.

Well, it's not an itinerary I'd like to try and do but it's your trip so....

I'd take the 7:15 AM train (Trenitalia) from Milano Centrale to Venezia S. Lucia: arrives at 9:42 AM, no changes.
You'll need to stow your luggage somewhere upon arrival.

Collect your luggage and take the 19:26 (Trenitalia) from Venezia S. Lucia to Firenze SM Novella: arrives at 21:39, no changes.

There are two slower trains that leave Venice an hour or so later than the one above but one of them takes over 4 hours/2changes to Florence, and the other takes over 5 hours/2 changes so the 19:26 is definitely preferable.

Hello eshasinha1987,

This is technically possible I'd echo the concerns about whether you might reconsider that there are better options.

You're treating Venice as a day trip but with 5+ hours of travel this amount of travel falls outside what I would consider okay for a day trip. And you're doing this with luggage which adds hassle and concerns during travel and all for 10-ish hours at best in Venice. I love Venice but it deserves a better visit than this in my opinion.

I'd move directly to Florence and spend that time exploring Florence rather than trying to add a major city as a side junket. But this is your trip and you get to decide what you want to see and how. Kathy laid out the best possible scenario for you and the rest is up to you.

Whatever you decide, have a great trip,

hey hey eshasinha1987
who's idea was this, when do you plan this adventure and is there a reason why in a hurry?
add your train times to travel and what time they leave stations, how many minutes to spend in venice, and is your place in florence reserved? do they have front desk service to check you in late at night?
absolutely craziest travel day i've read about with hours on the train, italy passing you by when it's a place to savor and enjoy.
it's your trip do as you like.

My question is --why?

If you want to see Venice give it the time it deserves or you will most likely come away hating the place.
Is this trip after you've been n Milan for a few days or is it just after you land in Milan?
If the former cut Milan short by a night or 2 and visit Venice.
Otherwise- save Venice for another trip.

Please ---- take map --- put some pins in it and I think you will understand everyone's objection. Why waste you time and money on a trip like this. It doesn't work. Understand the geography !!!

I’m really curious what the rest of your itinerary looks like. Is this your first trip? Who are “we” (ages, mobility level, etc)?

A few considerations: When are you planning to do this? Will your hotel in Florence allow a late check in? What are your plans for the following day? Why wouldn’t you stay the night in/near Venice and continue to Florence the next morning?

Any suggestions for what?

Have you investigated train transport schedules for the time it will take to travel from Venice to Florence.

Wouldn’t the GetYourGuide app you mentioned in another post have suggestions?

Guys thanks a lot for all the inputs. We have dropped that plan. So basically our itenerary is we are in Milan for 2 days. On the second day we are going to lake como. What all can we do in lake como? Would help us choking out the plan for the day.

What all can we do in lake como?

The inference is you are doing it as a day trip and returning to Milan that night...??

Take train to Varenna; buy day pass for the ferries and wander Varenna, Bellagio and Mennagio.

What constitutes "we"? If inclined to do light hiking, taking a walk ( from Mennagio) to Chiesa di San Martino affords a great view of the lake.

If I had to choose between a day on Lake Como and a day in Venice, I would choose a day in Venice. Could you shorten your stay in Milan, and spend the night in Venice?
