From Germany to Italy

My daughter is competing at the World Tap Dance Competition at the end of November. We are in Dresden for one week and then have an extra week to do as we wish. She would like to see Italy.
I was thinking of flying from Dresden to Venice for a couple days then train to Florence for the remainder. We need to be back in Frankfurt for our flight back to Canada. I don't know if this is the best?

Would like any information for transportation, hotels, attractions. Going to get Rick Steve's books tomorrow.

Thanks

Dresden only has a very small airport. No flights to anywhere in Italy. See list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dresden_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations
You will probably have to go to Berlin to get a flight.

List of airlines and destinations from Berlin Schönefeld airport here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Sch%C3%B6nefeld_Airport#Passenger

One place you could easily visit is Prague, that is only 2½ hours from Dresden by train.

You can look up trains for this, and for getting from Frankfurt airport to Dresden and Dresden to Berlin, on the DB (German Railways) website: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml

Look up trains in Italy (Venice to Florence) on the Trenitalia website: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
You have to use the correct Italian placenames for the stations: "Venezia S. Lucia" and "Firenze S. M. Novella"..

"We need to be back in Frankfurt for our flight back to Canada." - it would be simpler to fly back from Italy, Milan or Rome. Less additional travel.

Flights out of Dresden to Italy do not appear to be an option. You could take a train to Berlin the night before and take Easyjet flight from Berlin Tegel to Venice in the morning. You can fly Air Dolomiti from Florence to Frankfurt the evening before your flight home.

You can certainly make flight connections out of Dresden to Venice, at moderate price. But most of them involve transferring to or from a budget airline which require complete re-check-in (luggage, security, separate reservations at extra cost, etc.) at the interim stop. Looks like it would take about five hours. For reference: www.skyscanner.com.

If you haven't bought your Air Canada flights yet, consider using its multi-destination function to find an itinerary departing from a different city than Frankfurt. It shouldn't cost much more since you don't pay to retrack to Frankfurt, and could save a lot of time.
