we are driving from Geneva to Chamonix mid-August. Are there interesting spots to stay overnight and visit on the drive?

Yes! We are staying in Valais right now and there are some great things that you can see. Drive through the vineyards at the east end of Lake Geneva...the vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO world heritage site. They are stunningly beautiful and sit on vineyard terraces built by the Romans. Plenty of wineries there to stop in at. Chateaux Chillon, on the shores of Lake Geneva is in the town of Montreux at the east end of the lake as well. You can stop in Martigny and visit the St. Bernard dog museum and have lunch in this very pretty town. The drive to Chamonix (we just did it a few days ago) is stunning and there are lots of great little fruit stands and views to stop for on the way. Enjoy your trip!
